What is Prana? What is Pranayama and why do we do it? What techniques are good to start with?

The breath, the body and the mind are all intrinsically linked. But we tend to neglect or take for granted our inherent life force (Prana) – ultimately to the detriment of our own health and peace-of-mind.

Join us for our October workshop, where special guest teacher Tamblyn Lord will introduce a basic understanding of Prana and why the regular practice of breathing techniques (Pranayama) and your connection to the breath are instrumental in improving mindfulness and sense of wellbeing.

Some of the techniques we’ll explore on the day:

Ujjayi (Psychic or Victorious breath) • Full Yogic Breath • Kapalabhati (Shining Skull breath) â€¢ Nadi Shodhana (Alternate nostril breath)

In addition to Tamblyn’s inspirational teachings, this workshop will encourage you to further explore the vital relationship that exists between the breath and the mind. It may also help enhance and deepen your current asana practice.

Bookings essential, spaces are limited. Open to all levels – everyone welcome. Some movement involved.

WHEN? Saturday October 19, 12.30-2.30pm
HOW MUCH? $45 ($36 for Yoga Spot Fairfield members)
WHERE? Yoga Spot Fairfield, 70 Station St, Fairfield

About your teacher: Tamblyn Lord has been teaching yoga since 2003 and has a Level 3 Senior registration with Yoga Australia (the highest level available), making him one of the most experienced Hot Yoga and Vinyasa practitioners in Melbourne.

Tamblyn is a founding member of Yoga Flame (Moonee Ponds’) Teacher Training staff and he spends the majority of his time at that studio, guiding students in weekly classes and supporting teacher trainees. It was at Yoga Flame that Tamblyn and Megan, director of Yoga Spot Fairfield, crossed paths.

Tamblyn’s vast theatrical resume as an actor allows him to share a deep knowledge of voice and presence in being heard as a yoga teacher. His studies in physiotherapy also give him an acute anatomical understanding of the physical practice. His Vedanta training in Kerala, India in 2005 supports his passion and respect for the philosophy and traditions across all streams of yoga. Tamblyn is also a children’s yoga teacher trainer, a Thai-massage therapist, an avid hiker and the voice behind the Smiling Mind meditation app.

Join Mohit for this six-week series and explore the foundations of Hatha yoga – perfect for beginners or those returning to yoga after some time away.

Week-by-week you’ll break down elements of the practice, discuss basic yoga terms and establish an understanding of correct alignment and technique.

Small class numbers will ensure personal attention and assists, and participants will receive handouts recapping the week’s class for home use and review.

This series is perfect if you want to:

  • Gain confidence on the mat
  • Build bodily strength and tone
  • Better manage stress and anxiety
  • Tune into your breath

We know what it’s like to be reluctant to jump into a Hot Yoga or Vinyasa Flow class – or to attend those classes but still feel like a fish out of water. This series is the ideal preparation for our more dynamic offerings.

Can’t attend every week? No problem – either make-up the class with your choice from our timetable, or re-join a session on the next available series.

THE DETAILS

Dates: Thursday Sept 12 – Thursday Oct 17, 7.30-8.30pm

Investment: $120 for six week course or $160 + 2 extra classes per week

Note: Class will be capped at 12, with a minimum of 8 registered participants for series to run.

Say whaaaat? You read right. We’re bringing together three of our all-time favourite things: yoga, food and wine, in a delicious and social collaboration with Retreat Here.

Join us on Saturday August 24 for an all-levels Vinyasa Flow class, before we re-group around the corner at 15 Pounds for a nourishing vegetarian lunch and glass of wine.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow yogis, to share in conversations about how much you enjoy your practice, and discover more about the interesting lives you lead away from the mat.

Yoga and wine gatherings such as these have become a specialty offering for Retreat Here, so we are very excited to bring our two communities together. If nothing else, the afternoon is a great way to get a yoga class in, meet some new people, and unwind with a vino.

Bookings essential, spaces are limited. Open to all levels – everyone welcome.

Join Megan in an exploration of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s (TCM) Five Element Theory and learn more about the five Shen – or spirits – associated with the body’s Yin organs (heart, kidney, spleen, liver and lungs).

Fire, Earth, Metal, Water & Wood are understood to be the Five Elements of TCM and each element is awarded a number of characteristics. Together, we’ll discover their separate natures, movements and traits, and how they affect our emotions and interactions in the world, through a series of long-held yin yoga poses and discussion.

In this two-hour workshop we will:

  • Start by establishing a sense of harmony in body and mind with a slow-movingQi Gong session

  • Move through a juicy Yin Yoga practice that helps balance the energy (or Qi flow) in the five meridians

  • Conclude with a mindful, guided Yoga Nidra meditation.

Experience the bliss of Yoga Nidra, commonly referred to as yogic sleep, which is an immensely powerful meditation technique and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. The best part is, you get to lie down for the whole thing! You will leave feeling deeply rested and balanced in both body & mind.

Bookings essential, spaces are limited. Open to all levels – everyone welcome.

We are so excited for the first of our monthly Sound Meditation sessions, with the amazing Nicole from Sound Consciousness. Sessions will be held on the last Friday of every month, so this upcoming one is Friday April 26, 7.45-8.45pm. Book your spot for $22 online here (or via the MindBody app), or $25 on the night. The early bird gets the worm 😉

If you didn’t catch Nicole’s Sound Meditation on our launch weekend, or haven’t shared in this practice before, here’s some info on its amazing benefits and what to expect.

“In these sessions, we use sound as a means to venture deeper within the self, to practice deep listening, and to let go of the monkey mind. Join us to journey deep within, to begin cultivating self-awareness, and creating greater space between your internal and external worlds,” says Nicole.

She continues, “In this quiet space begins an unravelling and letting go, as you sink deeper and deeper into transcendental realms, and find pockets of deep quiet and peace within, and create a stronger connection to your true self. It’s a remarkably restful sound meditation journey, that will have you feeling deeply rested, rejuvenated and with greater mental clarity.”

It’s an event you don’t want to miss, yogis. Wear something warm and comfortable, feel free to bring a pillow or something soft to place under your head. You will be lying down for the entire session so it’s friendly to all ages, all levels, all backgrounds. Bring your family, bring your friends. Spread the word. Any questions, drop us an email or ask at the studio.
